Use a puzzle as a Friday spelling review, a center activity or homework for a week with a theme such as silent letters or prefixes. The word lists are fixed, so pick the puzzle that matches the skill you are teaching. Long A Words and Long E Words cover vowel sounds, Prefix Practice and Suffix Practice cover word parts, and Sight Words covers common tricky words.
Spelling Bee Words has eighteen hard words such as rhythm, mnemonic, lieutenant and silhouette. Often Misspelled has more, including occurrence, privilege and millennium. Both are hard 16 by 16 grids.
Short Vowels, Long A Words and Long E Words use short, regular words in 10 by 10 grids with eight words. Sight Words and Silent Letters are also easy and fit a 2nd grader who reads on level.
Easy puzzles (10 by 10, words across and down) work from about age 6. Medium puzzles (13 by 13, diagonals added) suit ages 8 to 11. Hard puzzles (16 by 16, every direction, backwards too) are for older kids and adults.
Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, with each word marked where it hides. When you play online, the Show answers button marks them on the grid.
