Christmas traditions are one medium puzzle. Others cover Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, the winter solstice, New Year's Eve and a hard puzzle on December holidays from around the world, so a mixed group can all find something to solve.
Not always. Hanukkah starts on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, so it falls between late November and late December. The puzzle works at any time and uses words such as menorah, dreidel and latkes.
Try Winter Weather, Winter Clothes, Gift Giving or Holiday Treats. Each has eight short, familiar words on a 10 by 10 grid that run only across and down, so a child who is just starting to read can finish one.
Easy puzzles (10 by 10, words across and down) work from about age 6. Medium puzzles (13 by 13, diagonals added) suit ages 8 to 11. Hard puzzles (16 by 16, every direction, backwards too) are for older kids and adults.
Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, with each word marked where it hides. When you play online, the Show answers button marks them on the grid.
