How to use these Picture word searches
Sit with a four or five year old and say the name of each picture out loud, then look for the first letter in the grid together. Teachers can use the pages for centers, early finishers or sight word practice, and parents can slip one into a travel bag. Each PDF has the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2.

They suit children from about age 4 to 7 who are learning letters and first words. Pictures replace the word list, so a child who cannot read yet can still match what they see to the letters in the grid.
Look at a picture, say the word out loud and spell it, then hunt for those letters in the grid. When the child finds the word, circle it. The answer key lists all six words if a grown-up needs to check.
Only simple, concrete things that are easy to draw, such as apple, duck, kite and bus. Each puzzle has six words of three to seven letters, with no verbs, plurals or abstract words.
Easy puzzles (10 by 10, words across and down) work from about age 6. Medium puzzles (13 by 13, diagonals added) suit ages 8 to 11. Hard puzzles (16 by 16, every direction, backwards too) are for older kids and adults.
Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, with each word marked where it hides. When you play online, the Show answers button marks them on the grid.
