The Hebrew name has a first letter with no exact English match, so Hanukkah, Chanukah and other spellings are all in use. These puzzles use Hanukkah. Hebrew words are spelled the way they commonly appear in English.
The Maccabees (medium) and The Maccabean Revolt (hard) use words from the story: the Temple, the rededication, Judah, Mattathias and the battles. Eight Nights and Spin the Dreidel are the best fit for young children.
A few hard puzzles reach beyond Hanukkah to Jewish holidays and months, symbols, foods, life customs and places in Israel, which suits an older group or a Jewish culture unit.
Easy puzzles (10 by 10, words across and down) work from about age 6. Medium puzzles (13 by 13, diagonals added) suit ages 8 to 11. Hard puzzles (16 by 16, every direction, backwards too) are for older kids and adults.
Page 2 of every PDF is the answer key, with each word marked where it hides. When you play online, the Show answers button marks them on the grid.
