Most word searches are over before your coffee cools. A hard word search is a big grid with 20 or more hidden words, and every word can run in any of eight directions, including backwards.
A hard word search comes down to six decisions, and the table shows them in the order you meet them.
| Step | What to do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Learn the four things that make a puzzle hard | Grid size and word count matter as much as word length |
| Step 2 | Choose medium or hard | Move up one level at a time |
| Step 3 | Choose a theme | Words you half know hide the longest |
| Step 4 | Choose a season or holiday | Few printed sets exist, so know what to look for |
| Step 5 | Solve with a method | Backwards words hide in plain sight |
| Step 6 | Check your answers | Read one line of the key, not the whole page |
Step 1: What makes a hard word search hard
Four things decide how hard a word search is. They are the size of the grid, the number of words you hunt, the directions the words run in, and the words themselves.
Grid size sets how many letters you have to scan. A 15 × 15 grid has 225 squares, and a 20 × 20 grid has 400. You can see the whole page at once, but you can only recognise a few items at a time. Jeremy Wolfe, a vision scientist, describes in his Guided Search 6.0 model how attention has to pick which items to look at next. More squares means more picking.
Word count sets how many hunts you run. An easy puzzle hides 6 words. In our Hard puzzles each grid hides 20, 25 or 30.
Direction does the most damage. In an easy puzzle every word reads forwards, across or down. In a hard puzzle words also run backwards (right to left or bottom to top) and along all four diagonals. Our Hard puzzles follow a fixed rule. Every Tricky puzzle has at least 6 backwards words, every Tough puzzle at least 8 and every Expert puzzle at least 10. Across the three levels about half of all hidden words read backwards: 408 of 800 in Tricky, 480 of 1,000 in Tough and 587 of 1,200 in Expert.
A puzzle is hard when the answer is in front of you and your eyes still skip it.
Why do backwards words slow you down? Researchers who tracked eye movements while people read mirrored, reversed and inverted text, Chandra, Krügel and Engbert, found an overall slow-down compared with normal text. A backwards word in a grid is not mirrored text. Your eyes still expect letters to arrive left to right, and they have to work against that habit.
The last lever is the words. A familiar word is easy to find once you spot two letters, because you can predict the third. An unfamiliar word like ASTHENOSPHERE gives you nothing to predict, so you check letter by letter.
Step 2: Choose medium or hard
The word search hard level has no official definition. Every publisher draws its own line, so compare the numbers on the cover, not the label. The table lays our own six levels side by side. The first three are our Large Print line, the last three are our Hard line.
| Level | Grid | Words per puzzle | Directions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large Print Easy | 8 × 8 | 6 | Across and down, forwards |
| Large Print Medium | 11 × 11 | 10 | Adds diagonals going down, forwards |
| Large Print Expert | 14 × 14 | 15 | All eight |
| Hard Tricky | 15 × 15 | 20 | All eight |
| Hard Tough | 18 × 18 | 25 | All eight |
| Hard Expert | 20 × 20 | 30 | All eight |
If you want a medium hard word search, start at Tricky. It keeps the grid close to what you know and adds a third more words than our Large Print Expert. Then follow one rule. When most puzzles are finished in one sitting without help, move up a level. If a page feels crowded or you lose your place, stay where you are or step back one.
Our hard word search puzzles cover all three steps. Each level holds 40 puzzles, all free.
Step 3: Choose a theme, hard word searches by theme
A theme gives you a tool. Know the field and you can guess words before you see them. Do not know it and the theme turns into pure hunting. The three Hard levels cover 24 themes, eight per level and five puzzles each. Here is how common requests map onto them.
Animals and dogs
A hard animal word search gets hard through names, not through the animals. Our Tricky level has Ocean Life, with puzzles on whales and dolphins, coral reef, deep sea creatures, the seashore, and sharks and rays. NARWHAL and BARRACUDA are in there. Our Tough level has The Rainforest, with mammals, birds and reptiles, and insects and spiders. A difficult animal puzzle leans on rare names like these. None of our Hard puzzles is about dogs, but the dog word search theme has a hard level of 16 × 16 grids with 18 words. If you want a dog word search hard enough to bother you, look for breed names such as SCHNAUZER, DACHSHUND, GREYHOUND and CHIHUAHUA, because the names are long and share many letters.
Science, space and dinosaurs
A hard science word search needs long Latin and Greek roots. Our Tricky level has Science Lab and Wild Weather (CUMULONIMBUS, ANEMOMETER). Our Expert level has Anatomy, Botany and Geology (ACETYLCHOLINE, ASTHENOSPHERE). Space has its own theme in Tough, Outer Space, with five puzzles from the solar system to missions and milestones. Dinosaurs sit in Tough too. The Age of Dinosaurs puzzles run from meat eaters to fossil hunting, and BRACHIOSAURUS and ARCHAEOPTERYX are two of the longest names. For a space word search hard enough to hold you for a while, or a dinosaur word search hard enough for an adult, the long names do the work.
Maths
A hard math word search is a vocabulary test. Our Expert level has a Mathematics theme with algebra, shapes and solids, calculus, number theory and chance. HYPOTENUSE and PARALLELOGRAM show what the puzzles look like.
Countries, sports and food
For a countries word search hard enough to be a geography quiz, our Tricky level has World Geography. Its five puzzles are rivers, mountain ranges, islands and archipelagos, capital cities, and deserts and plateaus. Sports Arena covers Olympic events, ball games, winter sports, gym and fitness, and a stadium day. DECATHLON and JAVELIN are hidden in the Olympic events puzzle.
For food, Cooking School is the nearest fit. It has knife and stove skills, herbs and spices, French kitchen words, dough and oven, and kitchen gadgets. A food word search hard to read needs words like CHIFFONADE and CORIANDER. Our Hard collection has no puzzle on healthy food, and the site has none on superheroes. The nutrition word search theme opens with a Healthy Foods puzzle and has a hard level of its own. If you hunt for a healthy food hard word search, choose a set that lists its words on the page and includes a key.
Step 4: Choose a season or holiday, hard word searches by holiday
Our Hard collection has no holiday puzzles, and none of its puzzles is built around a season. The seasons appear only as weather in Wild Weather, with winter weather and heat and drought as puzzles. Our holiday and season themes, such as Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving, each have a hard level instead: 16 × 16 grids with 18 words in every direction, backwards too. Here is what makes a holiday puzzle hard and which words to look for.
A holiday puzzle is easy when it hides the obvious words: TREE, GIFT, STAR. It is hard when it hides the long and specific ones. The table gives example words for each occasion. The lists are our suggestions and are separate from the contents of our puzzles.
| Occasion | Example words that make it hard |
|---|---|
| Christmas | FRANKINCENSE, POINSETTIA, WASSAILING, GINGERBREAD, EVERGREEN |
| Halloween | APPARITION, NIGHTSHADE, SARCOPHAGUS, CAULDRON, GRAVEYARD |
| Thanksgiving | CORNUCOPIA, CRANBERRY, WAMPANOAG, STUFFING, HARVEST |
| Valentine's Day | SWEETHEART, ADORATION, SERENADE, COURTSHIP, CHOCOLATE |
| Easter | HYACINTH, DAFFODIL, MARZIPAN, PROCESSION, SPRINGTIME |
| St. Patrick's Day | SHAMROCK, LEPRECHAUN, CLADDAGH, SHILLELAGH, BLARNEY |
| Birthday | CELEBRATION, ANNIVERSARY, STREAMERS, CONFETTI, SURPRISE |
| Spring and April | FORSYTHIA, DOWNPOUR, SEEDLING, PRANKSTER, CROCUS |
| Summer | SUNSCREEN, LIFEGUARD, HONEYSUCKLE, FIREFLIES, BARBECUE |
| Fall | SCARECROW, HAYRIDE, EQUINOX, BUTTERNUT, MIGRATION |
| Winter | SNOWDRIFT, BLIZZARD, FROSTBITE, SOLSTICE, HIBERNATION |
Christmas sets are the most common, so a really hard Christmas word search or a very hard Christmas word search deserves a closer look. Many are a normal grid with a festive word list. Check the grid and the directions before you trust the label. A hard Christmas word search puzzle should have a grid of 15 × 15 or bigger and words that run backwards.
The same check works for a hard Thanksgiving word search, a hard Halloween word search to print, and a printable hard winter or fall set. It works for a hard spring word search, a hard Valentine word search, and Easter, St. Patrick's Day and birthday puzzles too. Look at four things. The grid should be 15 × 15 or bigger, every direction should be in play, the word list should be printed with the grid, and the key should sit on its own page. If a set does not state the grid size, check one page before you print it.
A holiday only changes the words in a puzzle. The grid and the directions decide whether it is hard.
Step 5: Solve a hard word search with a method
Random scanning works on an easy grid and fails on a hard one. Use a routine.
- Read the full word list first. Mark the three longest words and the three words with a rare letter such as Q, X, Z, J or K.
- Hunt the rare letters first. A Z or an X stands out in a sea of vowels and often leads straight to a word.
- For every other word, hunt two ways. Look for its first letter and also for its last letter. A backwards word starts at the end.
- When you find a letter, check all eight neighbours before you move on.
- Cross off words as you go and shade them lightly. Two words can share a letter, so do not erase anything.
Work row by row after the first pass. Row by row is slower than a random glance, but it never skips an area.
Keep sessions short. If your eyes tire, look at something across the room for a moment before you go on.
Step 6: Check your answers without spoiling the puzzle
A good answer key sits on its own page, away from the puzzle. Each of our Hard puzzles prints with its answer key on page 2, and the footer of the puzzle page says so.
The free answer page shows the grid with every word marked. Cover it with a sheet of paper and slide the paper down a few rows at a time until you see the word you need. That is enough to get you unstuck without losing the rest of the puzzle. The optional one-file PDFs of the Hard levels also list every word's first square and direction. A line such as AMAZON R1 C11 · W says that AMAZON starts in row 1, column 11 and runs west, which means backwards.
Whether the puzzle is a healthy foods hard word search or a sports one, you want the key on a separate page, so that the puzzle page stays clean for the next person.
You can play or print any of the three Hard levels in US Letter or A4, free. Print at actual size (100 %) so the grid comes out as designed.
When our Hard puzzles are the wrong choice
Our Hard puzzles are the wrong pick in four cases.
- A holiday puzzle is what you want. The Hard collection has none, so use the hard level of a holiday theme.
- The puzzle is for someone with tired eyes. Hard grids pack 225 to 400 squares onto a page, so our large print word search puzzles fit better.
- A fresh puzzle every morning is the goal. The Hard collection is a fixed set of 40 puzzles per level, while the daily word search brings a new medium puzzle every day.
- The solver is a child. Our word search for kids puzzles have smaller grids and easier words.
FAQ
What is the hardest word search puzzle?
There is no official ranking. Among our puzzles the hardest are the Level 3 Expert ones: a 20 × 20 grid with 30 words, all eight directions, and words up to 16 letters long.
What are 10 tricky words?
CHIFFONADE, CUMULONIMBUS, NOCTILUCENT, ACETYLCHOLINE, ARCHAEOPTERYX, CLYTEMNESTRA, CHIAROSCURO, ASTHENOSPHERE, BRACHIOSAURUS and ANEMOMETER. All ten are hidden in our hard word search puzzles.
How to make a word search hard?
Pull four levers: a bigger grid, more words, more directions (add backwards and diagonal) and longer, less familiar words. Change one lever at a time so the step up stays finishable.
Where can I find printable hard word searches?
Our Hard Word Search page has 120 free puzzles in three levels. Each one plays online or prints as a US Letter or A4 PDF with its answer key, and you need no account.
How to find the answer key to a word search?
In a well-made puzzle the key is a separate page. Each of our puzzle PDFs has the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2, and the footer of the puzzle page says so.
Conclusion
A hard puzzle gets hard through four levers: the size of the grid, the number of words, the directions and the words themselves. Pull one lever at a time and move up a level only when most puzzles fall in one sitting. Pick a theme you half know, because the words you almost recognise are the ones that hide longest. Solve with a method, look for the last letter as well as the first, and keep the answer page face down until you are stuck.
