Picking a Bible word search for a group or a loved one gets easier when you start from the story. A Bible word search puzzle hides the words of one passage in a grid of letters, so the best way to choose is by story, book or feast.
Most Bible word searches share one idea. The words you hunt for come from a short passage, and that passage is printed next to the grid.
The nine ideas below follow the way people actually ask for these puzzles: by Christmas or Easter, by a person such as Joseph or Ruth, by a book such as Psalms, or by how hard the puzzle should be. Each idea names the passages in our Bible Word Search levels, so you can see what a puzzle covers before you print one. Every passage comes from the King James Version.
1. Christmas: the manger, the shepherds and the star
A Bible Christmas word search follows the story from Luke 2 into Matthew 2. In our Easy level the Christmas set has five puzzles: Laid in a Manger (Luke 2:7), Shepherds Keeping Watch (Luke 2:8-9), Good Tidings of Great Joy (Luke 2:10-11), Follow the Star (Matthew 2:9-10) and Gifts for the Child (Matthew 2:11). Words to find include MANGER, ANGEL, TIDINGS, GOLD and MYRRH.
The church year runs its Christmas cycle to Epiphany on January 6, according to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's calendar of observances. That makes the star and gifts puzzles a natural fit for the days after Christmas Day too. You can print the set for free from the Easy level of our Bible Word Search and hand one puzzle to each table.
The verse levels have no set called Advent. The Christmas Story is the closest, and it starts at the manger rather than with the weeks of waiting. If your group reads Isaiah before Christmas, Comfort Ye My People (Isaiah 40:1-2) is in the Expert level, at twelve words per puzzle.
2. Easter: the empty tomb and the risen Lord
Easter has its own set at Easy level, with five puzzles: He Is Risen (Matthew 28:5-6), Why Seek the Living (Luke 24:5-6), Early on the First Day (John 20:1), Mary Meets Her Master (John 20:16) and The Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25-26). The words are short and familiar, such as ANGEL, RISEN, STONE and RABBONI.
Old King James wording shows up in the grid. John 20:16 gives you SAITH, for example. Tell first-time solvers that the spelling is deliberate.
Lent has no verse set either. For the weeks before Easter, By His Stripes (Isaiah 53:4-5) sits in the Expert level, and Morning Prayer (Psalms 5:3) and Be Careful for Nothing (Philippians 4:6) sit in the Easy Prayer and Praise set. Then finish with Easter Morning.
3. Pentecost and the early church in Acts
Pentecost falls on the 50th day of Easter, as the ELCA's church year page puts it. The story is in Acts 2, and the Expert level carries it as A Rushing Mighty Wind (Acts 2:1-3).
The same Expert set, The Early Church, adds Breaking of Bread (Acts 2:42-44), Daily with One Accord (Acts 2:46-47), Paul and Silas Sing (Acts 16:25-26) and More Blessed to Give (Acts 20:35). Each puzzle hides twelve words, so this is a set for a confident solver or a small group working together.
4. Noah, Joseph and David: Old Testament stories
A Bible stories word search is easiest to plan by person. Noah has five Easy puzzles, from Noah Found Grace (Genesis 6:8-9) to A Bow in the Clouds (Genesis 9:13). David has five at Medium, starting with Five Smooth Stones (1 Samuel 17:40) and ending with A Clean Heart (Psalms 51:10-12). Abraham and Sarah and Moses and the Exodus also sit at Medium.
Joseph is the one to pick for a hard Bible word search about a single person. The Joseph in Egypt set is at Expert and runs from Joseph's Coat Taken (Genesis 37:23-24) to Meant unto Good (Genesis 50:19-20). Words such as BRETHREN and STRIPT come straight from the King James text. Daniel and Esther share an Expert set as well, with The Golden Sceptre (Esther 5:2) among the five.
5. Ruth, Sarah and Mary: women and mothers of the Bible
Our verse levels have no set named for mothers, but the women are there. Ruth and Naomi fill a Medium set of five puzzles, from Whither Thou Goest (Ruth 1:16) to Naomi's Little Son (Ruth 4:16-17). Sarah Laughed (Genesis 21:6-7) is in the Abraham and Sarah set. A Virtuous Woman (Proverbs 31:10-12) is at Expert.
Mary appears in Gifts for the Child (Matthew 2:11), where MOTHER is one of the words, and in Mary Meets Her Master (John 20:16). Put these together and you have a short, themed afternoon for a Mothers' Day gathering.
6. Love: from John 13 to First Corinthians 13
A Bible word search on love starts at Easy with the set Love One Another. It has A New Commandment (John 13:34-35), God Is Love (1 John 4:7-8), Be Kind to One Another (Ephesians 4:32), Greater Love Hath No Man (John 15:12-13) and Love Covers All (1 Peter 4:8).
For a longer reading, Charity Suffereth Long (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) is in the Medium level. The King James uses charity where newer Bibles use love, so CHARITY is a word to find.
7. Psalms, Proverbs and Isaiah: puzzles from one book
Some groups study a single book. Psalms has 11 puzzles across Easy and Medium, from A Joyful Noise (Psalms 100:1-2) to Whom Shall I Fear (Psalms 27:1-2). Proverbs has five at Expert, including A Soft Answer (Proverbs 15:1-4). Isaiah has seven, two at Easy and five at Expert.
The reference on every puzzle names the book, chapter and verses, so a leader can sort the pile by book in a minute. Together the three levels draw on 31 books of the Bible across 120 puzzles.
8. New Testament puzzles from Matthew to Revelation
A New Testament Bible word search can fill a whole term. Of the 120 puzzles, 57 come from the New Testament, drawn from 18 books. The Gospels give you Parables of Jesus and Miracles of Jesus at Medium, with Peace, Be Still (Mark 4:39) and Lazarus, Come Forth (John 11:43-44).
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5 to 7), Letters of Paul and A New Heaven (Revelation 21 and 22) are at Expert. Read the verse out loud first, then let the group look for the words.
9. A harder Bible word search for experienced solvers
A difficult Bible word search is mostly a matter of word count, grid size and direction. Easy puzzles hide six words in an 8 by 8 grid, and they run across and down, forwards only. Medium hides nine in an 11 by 11 grid and adds diagonals running down. Expert hides twelve in a 13 by 13 grid, in all eight directions, backwards too. At Expert the words are longer on average and older in spelling, such as BRETHREN, COLOURS and SCEPTRE.
| Level | Words per puzzle | Average word length |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 6 | about 5 letters |
| Medium | 9 | about 6 letters |
| Expert | 12 | about 6 letters, with older spellings |
A good Bible puzzle sends you back to the page.
For a hard one, begin with an Expert passage you know well. Knowing the verse helps you guess the next word, which makes a twelve-word grid feel fair rather than frustrating.
To keep a solver from giving up, start at Easy and move up once most puzzles are finished in one sitting without help. If a page feels crowded or the solver loses their place, stay at that level or step back one.
Group study or quiet time: using the same puzzle two ways
For a group, pick one set of five puzzles and print one sheet per person. Read the passage aloud, let people search, and keep the answer pages in your hand. Each puzzle has its own answer key on page 2 of its PDF, so you can check one grid without showing the rest. Five puzzles make five short sessions, or one session where each table takes a different story.
In a quiet time, choose the set that matches what you are reading this week. The full passage is printed above the grid, so you read it first and search second. The page has no reflection question. The page gives you the passage and the puzzle only, so bring your own question or prayer if you want one.
Names, places and old spellings
Every word to find is one word in capital letters, spelled as the King James Version spells it. That is why a list holds ABRAM before ABRAHAM, ISHMEELITES and MIDIANITES, and why JOSEPHS appears without its apostrophe. One phrase is the exception: in Lazarus, Come Forth the list shows COME FORTH with a space, and the letters run together in the grid. Once you have read the list, the old forms stop being a surprise.
Printing one sheet or a whole level
Every puzzle is free, so one sheet for one afternoon costs you nothing but paper. You choose US Letter or A4 for each PDF, and you need no account or email. If you lead a weekly group and would rather print 40 puzzles at once, each level is also sold as one optional print-ready PDF with a contents page and an answer page for every puzzle, for $4.99. You do not need it, because the same puzzles stay free one by one. Print at "Actual size", not "Fit", so the grid prints as designed. Choose Easy first for tired eyes, since it has the smallest grid, and print on plain paper in good light.
How to choose a Bible word search puzzle
Choose the story first and the level second. The table shows where each idea above sits.
| Idea | Level | Puzzles in the set | Books it draws on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas | Easy | 5 | Luke, Matthew |
| Easter | Easy | 5 | Matthew, Luke, John |
| Noah | Easy | 5 | Genesis |
| Love One Another | Easy | 5 | John, 1 John, Ephesians, 1 Peter |
| David | Medium | 5 | 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, Psalms |
| Ruth and Naomi | Medium | 5 | Ruth |
| Joseph in Egypt | Expert | 5 | Genesis |
| The Early Church | Expert | 5 | Acts |
Large print matters as much as the level for older solvers, so print one puzzle and look at it before you print a stack. The Easy and Medium grids print large on a full page. A church group can use Easy for newcomers and Expert for regulars, all from the same free page.
A Bible word search is the wrong choice in a few cases. Our verse levels take their words from verses, so for a puzzle built from the names of the books of the Bible, use the separate Books of the Bible word search. The verse levels have no Job puzzle. A group that reads another translation will find the King James wording of saith and thou foreign. Someone who wants study notes beside the puzzle is better served by a printed devotional, because our puzzles are puzzles to solve.
For background on the text itself, the Library of Congress describes how King James I commissioned the translation that appeared in 1611, and notes that the large lectern printing of 1611 carried a full calendar of the church year.
FAQ
What are some good Bible word search puzzles for adults?
Good ones print the passage the words come from, so the puzzle sends you back to the text. Choose by story, such as Christmas, Easter, Noah or Ruth, and by level, from six words per puzzle at Easy to twelve at Expert.
Is there a free Bible word puzzle for adults?
Yes. All 120 puzzles on our Bible Word Search page are free to play online or print, each with its answer key. The Medium and Expert levels suit adults, with nine and twelve words per puzzle.
Where can I find biblical word search puzzles?
You can find them in printed puzzle books, in church libraries and as downloadable PDFs. A PDF lets you print one puzzle at a time, in the size you need, for a class or a single reader.
How to solve the puzzle with answers?
Read the list of words, find each one in the grid, and circle it. The answer key on page 2 shows where every word sits, so a helper can check without spoiling the puzzle for the solver.
Conclusion
Start with the story your group already knows, then match the level to the solver. Christmas, Easter and Psalm 23 suit a first sitting at Easy. Joseph, Daniel and Paul's letters suit someone who wants twelve words per puzzle at Expert. Read the passage once before the grid, print the answer page for the helper, and the half hour becomes time with the text.
